Historical! Letter from the Holy Gaon Rabbi Yeshaya Bardaki requesting help and assistance of James Finn who was a British Consul in Jerusalem, in the then Ottoman Empire. Jerusalem 1860.
The letter deals with rescue and assistance of praise and approbation for a dear Jew as stated: האי גברא יקירא ר’ חיים הלוי שפירא להצילו במשפטו להציל עשוק מיד עשקו בוודאי מצוה רבה היא, ויהי’ חלקי עם המחזיקים יד עניים להצילם משופטי נפשם’. This historical letter is very interesting since Rabbi Yeshaya himself refused to accept charity money that was distributed by the Consul James Finn claiming it a sin to accept charity from gentile heretics, which delays the final redemption. Understandably, it can be differentiated that this letter is a request for James Finn to help in the trial but no need or request to acquire money from him.
[1] page, 14×21 cm. Written by a writer with hand written addition by Rabbi Yeshaya Bardaki to the British Consul James Finn, Jerusalem, 1860.
Good – very good condition.
