Two letters from Rabbi Yaakov Chai Zrihen, Chief Rabbi of Tiberias. 1952.
The letters are addressed to Rabbi Yaakov Ashkenazi, in the letters Rabbi Yaakov Chai inquires of his well being and takes interest and concern of his health condition. In one letter he mentions the renowned Dr. Ticho of Jerusalem.
Rabbi Yaakov Chai Zrihen [1869-1953], Chief Rabbi of Tiberias from the year 1929 until his passing. Born to his father Rabbi Baruch who was a businessman. During his youth he learned Torah from Rabbi David Abu and Rabbi Haviv Haim David Sathon. Married his wife Leah, daughter of Rabbi Binyamin Chamui author of ‘Amtachat Binyamin’. In the year 1900 he was from the founders of the ‘Yeshivat Keter Torah’ on HaShuk Street in Tiberias. Rabbi Yaakov Chai was known as a strong opponent of Zionism and the Alliance Organization, he was a disciple of Rabbi Elazar Elfrandi in zealousness. In the last year of his life, he was one of the first to sign the placard declaring that girls should rather give their lives than serve in the Sherut Leumi. Albeit, he was known for his genial ways with people and his patience in dealing with all queries.(was fondly called ‘Harav HaChaviv’ -"the friendly rabbi").
Rabbi Yaakov authored several sefarim: ‘Shut Bikurei Yaakov’, ‘Derashot Ohel Yaakov’, ‘Shufrei DeYaakov’ on the weekly Parshiot, and more.
