Rav Dr. Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer, robust, German leader of Orthodox Jewry, (1820-1899), author of Shut ‘Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer’ and sefer of innovations on Shas. Served from the year 1851 as Rav in Eisenstadt, there he founded Yeshiva and Beit Medrash LeRabbanim. From the year 1869 he was appointed as Rav of the ‘Adat Yisrael’ community in Berlin, and he established Beit Medrash LeRabbanim in the city. There they learned traditional Torah along with areas of general Jewish knowledge, language and philosophy. Rabbi Azriel published many sefarim and articles in the newspapers as part of his struggle against the reform movement. Alongside his many pursuits in public needs, educational undertakings and charity organizations, he continued to teach Shas and Poskim and answering questions in his Beit Medrash.
