Rare letter from the Admor of Lubavitch to the Chabadi Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Yosef Zevin editor of the ‘Encyclopedia HaTalmudot’, contains various matters and rare statements. New York, 1957.
Notations personally hand written by the Rebbe appear all along the letter. The holy signature of the Rebbe in the center of the letter.
The Rebbe blesses Rabbi Shlomo Yosef Zevin upon his birthday and discusses with him important matters that were going on. Among them: Money to spread Torah, the ‘Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak’ network and the Encyclopedia HaTalmudit. Later the Rebbe goes over matters of desecration of Shabbat and G-d, and discusses the Shabbat desecration by the shipping company Zim and implores Rabbi Shlomo Yosef Zevin to take action against them: "ולא יסכנו ר"ל את הישוב ע"י עינוי הדין ועיוות הדין והוראה בתורה של כהלכה ובפרט במצב העכשווי…"
Background: In the years 1960-1970, the Rebbe lead a stubborn struggle against the shipping company Zim who ran fleets between Israel and other countries. The fleets to Europe took less than a week, but those to the United States took more than a week which would also include Shabbat. The Rebbe raised a ruckus about this and offered alternative options. Therefore he influenced many not to travel with this company. Likewise he turned to the gaon Rabbi Moshe Feinstein and the gaon Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank and other poskim to help in this dispute. It is interesting to note throughout the discussions and various explanations by the company claiming that the traveling on Shabbat is not problematic, the Rebbe rejected their claims with is knowledge engineering of ships he learned in France and from his dealings in the United States.
