The Gaon Rabbi Zelig Reuven Bengis (1864-1953), one of the greatest Rabbis of Jerusalem and Rabd of HaEdah HaCharedit. He was born in Šnipiškės to his father Rabbi Zvi Hirsch. At the age of approx. seventeen, he started studying at the renowned Volozhin Yeshiva, where he became linked in love to his Rabbi the Natziv (who fondly called hum "A living Shas"). Rabbi Bengis was rabbinically ordained by leading Rabbis: the Natziv, Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor and Rabbi Chaim of Brisk. Since 1894, he served as a Rabbi in Bodki, Kalvarija and Smolensk. In 1938, he was called to served as Rabd of HaEdah HaCharedit of Jerusalem and to do so, he immigrated to the Holy Land. In Jerusalem, he fearlessly led the community (although he had no inclination to zealousness). After his passing, he was replaced by the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Zvi Dushinsky. Among his disciples were Moronan Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv.
