[1] leaf, with two printed letters and the handwritten address of the addressee. 20X30 cm. The letter by the Rabbis of Safed, Documents of the Emissaries of Safed in Italy, Letter 15. This Shadar is also mentioned in a letter in the sefer Shluchei Eretz Yisrael, p. 670.

Historical background of the document before us: in 1811 Rabbi Avraham Ben Chason, a descendant of Rabbi Shlomo Ben Chason author of the sefer ‘Mishpatim Yesharim’, was sent, subsequent to the  difficult events that befell the Jews of Safed. A new governor arrived to Safed and was cruel to the Jews of the town. He arrested several Talmidei Chachamim and demanded a fortune as ransom. The number of poor in the town had increased because of the many immigrants who came to the town and were supported by the Kollel. In order to meet the ransom requirements and save the poor from hunger, the community was forced to take an interest loan and got into a debt of fifty thousand Grush, in addition to its previous debts. After Rabbi Avraham Chason’s arrival in Italy, the letter before us was printed and sent to the philanthropists of Italy.
