Appearing on the title page is an inscription handwritten by the Rishon LeZion Rabbi Chaim David: "A gift given by the Gvir … Rabbi Chizkiyahu … to me the young Chaim David Chazan".
The Rishon LeZion Rabbi Chaim David Chazan (1869-1790) one of the great Gedolei Yisrael in his generation, the son of the Rishon LeZion Rabbi Yosef Raphael Chazan author of Chikrei Lev (one of the most well-known Shu"t sefarim among Sephardic Poskim and in general). In his youth he served as the head of the Shochtim of Izmir. Later, in 1840, he was appointed to serve as the head of the Rabbanim of the town, a position he held for several years. In 1855 he immigrated to the Land of Israel and settled in Jerusalem. There he served as a Rabbi alongside the greatest contemporary Rabbanim of Jerusalem Rabbi Moshe Benvenisti, Rabbi Chaim Nissim Abulafia and more. In Jerusalem, he made a great effort to help the members of the Yishuv and even travelled as a Shadar -fundraiser to Vienna. In 1861, he was appointed Chacham Bashi and Rishon LeZion, a position he held until his passing. He authored many compositions: the Shu"tN div Lev, Torat HaZevach – Dinei Shechita, Yitav lev – Drushim and more.
