The Only One in the World!

A lengthy letter, a deep question on Hilchot Treifot and Sircha in the lungs, by the Tzaddik Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Mendel Friedman of Nadvorna, one of the great Rabbis of his generation, which was sent to the Admor the Admired Gaon Posek HaDor Rabbi Meshulam Yissachar HaLevi Ish Horowitz Abd Stanislav and the environs.

The Holy Gaon the ‘Bar Levai’ wrote his response on the letter with the question, five lengthy lines written by a scribe to which he added several words and signed his full name, despite his weakness and old age.

The Holy Gaon Rabbi Meshulam Yissachar HaLevi Ish Horowitz [1805-1888] author of the ‘Bar Levai response. Was born to his great father the Gaon Rabbi Aryeh Leib Abd of Stanislav. He married the granddaughter of the the Holy Gaon Rabbi Meshulam Igra. Served as a Rabbi of several cities and towns and eventually replaced his great father as Abd. Except for his well-known sefer, he authored several compositions on the Torah and the Passover Haggadah, however they are but a crumb of the wealth of his Torah. Halachic questions were sent to him from all over the world, he had thousands of disciples, several of whom were Gedolei HaDor such as Moron the Kochav Yaakov of Hormilov. The greatness of his prayers and the miracles it worked were well-known and the Tzaddikim of the generation greatly admired him. The Holy Rabbi of Peremyshlian sent sick people to him with Pidyon Nefesh so he would pray for them; the Divrei Chaim of Sanz came to him to absorb his holiness. His war against Reform Judaism served as a model of a leader who cared for everything his generation did and was a great success.

The Great Gaon Yaakov Mendel Friedman Abd of Nadvorna – the 36th generation of Rabbis. For more than forty years he served as the Rosh Beit Din of Nadvorna, yet not as its Mara DeAtra due to a regulation that was set during the days of the Frankists. He passed away in ca. 1900. Well-known is his correspondence with all Gedolei HaDor about an Agunah, about a local Shochet, and about the laws of Mechirat Chametz. In addition, responses by and to him appears in leading Shu"t sefarim including ‘Avnei Tzaeedek’, ‘Beit Shlomo’, ‘Divrei Chaim’, ‘Sheilat Shalom’ and more.
