Lengthy letter on Halacha and Pilpul and with a rare reference to the Heter to wear wigs ‘Frok and Sheitlach’, by the renowned Gaon Rabbi Aharon Shmuel Assad, the son and successor of the great Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Assad, which was written fearfully and with great respect to the Great Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ulman author of the ‘Yeri’os Shlomo’, with wonderous expressions in the name of the Mahari Assad about the Yeri’os Sholom in his lifetime. Wednesday, Parashat Noah, Karlsburg, [1854].
At the beginning of the Pilpul letter, Rabbi Aharon Shmuel Assad writes to his Rav the Yeri’os Shlomo of Makova, with great respect, in poetic language, that he would not have dared sending his innovations to the Holy Menorah ‘since I feared approaching the holy and a voice is calling do not approach’ However, Rabbi Aharon Shmuel notes that his great father, Abd of Serdhali, dared to write to the Gaon saying that where his greatness and glory lie, so does his humility.
This wonderous sentence indicates the great admiration of the Mahari Assad to the Yeri’os Shlomo, although they were practically of the same age.
The letter contains various halachic matters, about Kedushas Bechora BaBehemot, his in-law Rabbi Lipman Glaser of Nikolsburg, Brit Milah at twilight, Ibud Lishma in the straps of the Tefillin – Chazaka Bezeh and various Pilpulim on Yeyin Nesech.
At the center of his letter is the question of permitting the use of wigs, since a large portion of the hair comes from dead gentiles, which is forbidden in Hana’ah.
The renowned Gaon Rabbi Aharon Shmuel Assad [1830-1905] the son of Moron the mahari Assad, succeeded his father as the Rav of Serdhali for more than thirty years. A disciple of Moron the Ketav Sofer, Rabbi Shlomo Kluger, Rabbi Avraham Schag and the Yeri’os Shlomo of Makova. Corresponded on Halacha with all Gedolei HaDor. Published his father’s book.
