Tur Choshen Mishpat. Wilhelmsdorf, [1727]. The personal copy of the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Yosef Landau of Kampana author of ‘Goren Atad’ and ‘Kur Habechinah’ the son of the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Yonah Landau author of ‘Ma’on HaBerachot’, with his handwritten signature and notations.
On the title page and the last leaf, lengthy and full signatures handwritten by Maor HaDor the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Shmuel Landau, who passed away when he was young.Several notations handwritten by him in the sefer.
The Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Yosef Halevi Landau [1800-1832] the son of the Gaon Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Yonah Landau author of ‘Ma’on HaBerachot’, ‘Ein HaBedolach’, in 1824, with the passing of his father, he was appointed his successor as the Rav of Kampana, this despite his young age, approx. twenty four years of age, with the support of his in-law the Gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger who appreciated and admired him. He served as Rosh Yeshiva and had hundreds of disciples. He was well-known for his fight against Reform Judaism. On which, he wrote the sefer ‘Kur HaBechinah’, which was approbated by his in-law Moron the Chasam Sofer. The Chasam Sofer refers to him in his response, praising him as ‘אהל תורה שיכן באדם גדול בענקים’.. He also authored the sefer ‘Goren Atad’ and Sefer ‘Mishkan Shilo’, which were also approbated by Maranan Rabbi Akiva Eiger and the Chasam Sofer and corresponded with all the Geonim of his generation including the Beit Ephraim, the Gaon Rabbi Moshe Ze’ev of Bialystok author of ‘Agudat Ezov’ and Marot HaTzovot, the Chemdat Shlomo. He passed away when he was young.
