Remnant of the Geonim of Krakow! The handwriting of two of the Geonim and tzaddikim of Krakow, th eGaon Rabbi meir rappaport Av Beis Din of Likova and Rosh Av Beis Din of Krakow and the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Alter Frankel-Teomim Av Beis Din of Podgorze-Krakow the grandson of Moron the Divrei Chaim. Krakow, 1899.
On the special leaf, the Geonim write and sign about the giving of prepayment – subscription – for the holy Sefer of the Gaon author of Meloh HaRoim Rabbi Yaakov Zvi Yalisch ‘Kol Yaakov’. On one of its sides, the Gaon Rabbi Meir Rappaport writes that he itrusts that all overs and respectors of the Torah will come to his aid … and the author’s merit will protect all those who support Meleches Shamayim writing and signing here in Krakow on the eve of Shabbas Kodesh Bereshis 1899. Meir Hacohen Rappaport previously Av Beis Din of Lokava.
The Holy Gaon Rabbi Meir Hacohen Rappaport [1849-1921] the son of the renowned Gaon Rabbi Shabtal Av Beis Din of Dombrova the son-in-law of the philanthropist Rabbi Aryeh Leibush Margaliyot of Krakow. Was known as the young Rav of Lokov Lokava, after which he was named and renowned. His brother-in-law was the great Gaon Rabbi Yaakov of Hermilov author of Kochav MiYaakov, the son-in-law of his father Rabbi Shabtai. Many of the Geonim rabbis sent their question to him. Eventually, he returned to Krakow, his hometown, and served as its Rosh Av Beis Din for thirty years. Responses to his by the Geonim of the time appear in Avnei Nezer, Imrei Cohen, Beis Yitzchak, Kochav MiYaakov and more.
On the other side of the leaf, the handwriting and signature of the Holy Gaon Rabbi Shimon Alter Frankel Teomim of Podgorze which is near Krakow [1950-1902] the son of the Gaon Rabbi Yechezkel Sheraga and the son-n-law of the Holy Rav Rabbi David Halberstam of Kshanov. His great grandfather Meor Yisroel Moron the Divrei Chaim appointed him the Rav of Podgorze and stood by his side to support and advise him on all matters. His descendents include renowned families, this despite the fact that most of his family perished in the Holocaust. Among his renowned descendents today: the Geonim Rabbi Baruch Shimon Schneersohm the Rosh Yeshiva of the Tshebin Yeshiva, Rabbi Elchonon Halperin of Radamishla, the in-law of all contemporary Tzaddikim, and Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau the Chief Rabbi.
