Volume of ancient leaves handwritten by the Chaver Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Wallich HaRofeh, a prominent figure in Ashkenaz. Saxony, Germany, early 18th century.
A volume of leaves containing mainly Piyyutim, poems and rhymes in ancient Ashkenazi script. One of the poems is dedicated to the memory of the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Schotten (Moharashashach) author of Kos HaYeshu’os on the tractates of the Shas and one of the forefathers of Moron the Chasam Sofer.
The Chaver Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Wallich HaRofeh, of the renowned Wallich family whose descendents were great Talmidei Chachamim and many physicians. Not much is known of Rabbi Yitzchak: he was born in Koblenz, Saxsony, to his father Rabbi Shimon in the early 18th century. It is also known that he was a close disciple of Rabbi Yaakov Poppers author of the Shav Yaakov, one of the greatest Poskim of his generation (halachic correspondence between the Rav and his disciple was printed in the Sefer). In 1704 he received from his Rav, Rabbi Yaakov, a ‘Chaver’ certificate. It is also known that he studied medicine at the University of Halle and that he married Mrs. Sarah the daughter of the renowned philanthropist and Parnas Rabbi Moshe Binyomin Wolf of Dessau.
