The Last Letter from Brisk! Maran the Rav of Brisk in a Letter on Charity Matters and Supporting a Talmud Torah in His City, Shortly before the Destruction of Brisk in the World War. Summer 1939
A lengthy letter Signed by Moron the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Ze’ev Soloveitchik of Brisk, shortly before the Holocaust and the last known in our time, from the time before the great destruction in World War II.
The letter was written on the large official stationery of the Rav of Brisk and was sent to the managers of a charity fund for Brisk and its educational and charity institutions. Moron expresses his gratitude and confirms he has received the charity and the large amounts in dollars that were sent to the Talmud Torah and for Maot Chittin.
At the end of the letter, a line ‘מוקירם ‘יצחק זאב באאמו"ר הגאון החסיד רשכבה"ג מרן חיים הלוי זצוקללה"ה סאלאוויציק‘‘ beneath this line, the date was added in the Gaon’s handwriting "the 14th of Iyar 5699 [1939] Brisk". As said, this is the last known letter from Brisk, indicating a small fraction of Moron the Rav of Brisk’s actions as the Rav of the town.
[1] official stationery of Moron the Rav of Brisk. 28X22 cm. A small tear in its upper part. Slight traces of early gluing on the margins. Fold marks. Very good condition [compared to other letters by the Rav of Brisk – excellent condition].
