Letter Handwritten Entirely by the Mussar Gaon the Mashgiach Rabbi Yehuda Leib Chassman, Shtotzin, 1925.


In the letter, the Mashgiach discusses the state of the yeshivas of Poland and Lithuania and his personal situation ("It has been about a week since I have returned from Radin and I have been imprisoned in my house and have not yet returned to my usual [health]"). The Mashgiach signs his letter with the name: Yahel.

The Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Leib Chassman (1869-1936), the spiritual manager of the Telz and Hebron Yeshivas and one of the greatest Ba’alei Mussar in his generation. Was born to Rabbi Raphael and in his childhood studied with his friend the Gaon Rabbi Ozer Chaim Grodzhinsky. In his youth, he studied Torah and Mussar with the Geonim Rabbi Yitzchak Blaser and the Sabba of Slabodka Rabbi Natan Zvi Finkel. In addition, he studied for about a year in the renowned Talmud Torah of Kelm with the Sabba Rabbi Simcha Zissel Ziv. In Kelm he marrried Mrs. Toiba Malka the daughter of R. Avraham Yavneh of the residents of the town. After his marriage, he studied for about a year at the Volozhin Yeshiva and later served as Rav in Shtotzin. He also taught Torah and Mussar at the yeshiva of Hagra Grodon in Telz. In his old age, he immigrated to the Land of Israel and served as the spiritual manger of the Hebron Yeshiva.
