Letter by the Great Gaon Rabbi Eliyahu Meir Bloch to the Jerusalem Activist Rabbi Moshe Porush about Establishing Agudas Yisroel in America, Cleveland, 1947 .
In the letter, Rabbi Bloch appeals to Rabbi Moshe Porush, praising his activist son Rabbi Menachem Porush for his efforts to establish Agudas Yisroel in America too.
The Gaon Rabbi Eliyahu Meir Bloch (1894-1955) one of the greatest Rosh Yeshivas in the USA. The son of the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Yehuda Leib Bloch author of the Shi’urei Da’as and one of the greatest rabbis of Lithuania. Served as a Ram at the Telz Yshiva in Lithuania and after immigrating the America, re-established the yeshiva in Cleveland alongside his brother-in-law the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Katz.
R. Moshe Porush (1893-1983) was born in Jerusalem and studied at the Etz Chaim institutions. Was one of the founders of Agudas Yisroel in Jerusalem and served as its chairman during the British Mandate and as an observer on its behalf at the council of the marital law in Jerusalem during the War of Independence. Since 1950, he served as a member of the city council of Jerusalem and later, as the Deputy Mayor of the city, until his retirement in 1969.
R. Menachem Porush (1916-2010) studied at the Etz Chaim Yeshiva, served as the chairman of the center of Agudas Yisroel in Jerusalem and as the Deputy Mayor of the city during the years 1947-1969 and as a member of the Knesset for Chazit Datit Toratit, Agudas Yisroel and Yahadus HaTorah during the years 1959-1994 (except for a short break during the eighth Knesset). Within the framework of his public positions, he served as the chairman of the Labor and Welfare Committee and as the Deputy Minister of Labor and Welfare.
