Letter of request signed by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky, Vilna, 1933.
In the letter, Rabbi Chaim Ozer appeals to the union of American rabbis and asks them with touching words to assist the Rameiles Yeshiva in Vilna (by the yeshiva’s representative in the USA Rabbi Yeshayahu Bakesht of Cleveland) since its situation had deterioirated after the Great Depression. "This Yeshiva was founded more than a hundred tears ago by the greatest Geonim and since then its light has not ceased to shine even during the days of the World War and the German occupation and Torah has not stopped from its Beis Midrash". In his words, Rabbi Chaim Ozer refers to the members of the yeshiva’s staff including the great Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Heiman the Rosh Yeshiva and author of ‘Chidushei Rabbi Shlomo’.
The Rameiles yeshiva in Vilna, one of the glorious yeshivas of Lithuania where many of Gedolei Hador of the previous generation had studied. It was established in 1805 by Rabbi Avraham Abbali Posveler, one of the greatest rabbis and Dayanim of Vilna, as an institution for boys of poor families. Gradually, the place attracted many Torah scholars and it soon became a yeshiva for all intents and purposes. Only in 1831, It got a permanent structure, when it received several houses in the cneter of the Jewish Ghetto of Vilna, near the Beis Midrash of the Gaon of Vilna. The houses, which were donated for the establishment of a yeshiva by a woman named Sarah R. Tuvies (the daughter of Rabbi Tuvia) stood on a plot that was named after its first owner "Chatzer R. Meila" and the yeshiva was therefore called the "R. Meiles Yeshiva", the yeshiva of R. Meila. The presdient of the yeshiva and its founder, Rabbi Avraham Abbali appointed Rabbi Yoel Naftali Hertz as its Rosh Yeshiva and he held the position until his passing in 1858. With him served as Rosh yeshiva, the Rav Eliezer Teitz the disicple of the Gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger and since 1832 also Rabbi Mordechai Meltzer. For a short while, in 1839, the Rosh yeshiva was also rabbi Yisroel Salanter, the founder of the Mussar movement.
