Rabbi Yosef Shmuel Halevi ben Rabbi Yisroel Yonah Landau (1800-1837) – a sharp Gaon, since 1824 succeeded his father as the Rav of the Kempno community, there he headed a large yeshiva. Corresponded with Gedolei Hador including Rabbi Akiva Eiger, the Chasam Sofer, Rabbi Ephraim Margolis, Maros HaTzovos, Chemdas Shlomo and more. Suffered from illnesses and weakness and passed away in his prime. In his will, he instructed that he not be eulogized as ‘a great Tzaddik, but studied Torah undisturbed and had many innovations truly believed in hashem and His Torah’. Some of the many manuscripts written by him were published in his Sefer "Kur HaBechina" – containing Shut and Derashos from his Sefer Mishkan Shilo and his last will and testament. His compositions were approbated by Maran the Chasam Sofer and Rabbi Akiva Eiger.
