The trial of the Western Wall! Important testimony by Rabbi Eliyahu Mordechai Eisenstein the secretary of the Rav of Jerusalem the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant on maintenance works on the Western Wall Plaza. Jerusalem, 1930.
A typewritten letter (copying on carbon paper) with a testimony by Rabbi Eliyahu Mordechai Eisenstein – the secretary of the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant and one of the activists of Jerusalem – describing how thirty five years earlier, in 1895, Rabbi Yosef Rivlin came to Rabbi Shmuel Salant, who was in charge of the fund of the Kollelim committee, with a request to receive a sum of money for renovating the floor of the Western Wall Plaza. Rabbi Shmuel agreed, of course, to glorify the remnant of our Temple and the sum was granted.
This important testimony constituted the base of the Western Wall Commission which was established by the British for settling the issues concerning the prayer in the Plaza and other related issues, issues that caused the first riots of the Arabs of Eretz Yisroel against the Jews.
Rabbi Eliyahu Mordechai Eisenstein (born in 1867) was born to his father Rabbi Avraham who was one of the activists of the old Yishuv and the head of Beis Va’ad HaKollelim of the city. Held several public positions as the secretary of Va’ad HaKellali Knesse Yosroel and more.
Rabbi Yosef Rivlin (1838-1897) one of the important activists of Jerusalem and one of its builders. Was one of the activists who worked for building neighborhoods outside the walls of the Old City.
