Rabbi Yoel ben Rabbi Meir Katz, was born in ca. [1890] to a pedigreed rabbinic family. An important Rav and Posek in Hungary before the Holocaust, was the disciple of the Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Greenwald in Satmar, the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Greenfeld in Smihaly and the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich in Shamli. Was the son-in-law of Rabbi Pinchas Weinberg, Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshiva in the communities of Nigrest (near Satmar) and the entire district of Ovash, who was a leading disciple of the Ketav Sofer and had many disciples. After World War I, Rabbi Yoel Katz was a Rav in Cherta and Nigrest and was chosen to serve as Rav of Erder and its district. Served also as Moreh Tzaeddek in Nigrest. Authored the Seforim ‘Tiras HaKesef’, Kuntras ‘Keter Malchus’ and Sefer ‘Pardes Rimonim’. Corresponded with the greatest rabbis of Hungary and Romania of his generation. rabbi Yoel published in 1942 the Sefer Mahraf Schusberg Shut by his in-law and added to this Sefer three of his Seforim: ‘Glilei Zahav’, ‘Talelei Oros’ Shut and ‘Kanfei Nesher’. Was renowned as an expert on matters of Gittin and Heter Agunot. Was killed on Kiddush Hashem in Auschwitz in Sivan 1944 with his wife, three children, daughter-in-law, sons-in-law and all his grandsons.
