Lengthy and Important Psak Halacha on Matters of Gittin Handwritten by the Great Gaon Rabbi Yonasan Steif. Pest 1935

Lengthy letter about giving a woman a Gett at the Shlichus of the husband, handwritten entirely and signed by the holy hand of the great Gaon Rabbi Yonasan Steif Av Beis Din of Budapest and was sent to the great Gaon Rabbi Yehoshua Ornstein, one of the Geonim of Lemberg in Galicia who moved to Zurich, where he served as a Dayan and Moreh Hora’ah of the ‘Yeshurun’ community [the Yekke one].

The letter was written on two pages and was sent on the third of Iyar 1935 in Pest. Rabbi Yonasan Steif uses varied superlatives to describe the Gaon Rabbi Yehoshua Ornstein.

On the back of one of the pages, an acrostic for a tombstone of a woman named ‘Leah Rivka’, not in the handwriting of the Gaon Rabbi Yonasan Steif.

The great Gaon Rabbi Yonasan Steif [1887-1948] one of the greatest Poskim of the USA after World War I. In his youth, he studied at the ‘Yeshiva HaRama’ with Maran the author of the "Sheves Sofer". Served as Dayan of Ungvar and eventually moved to Budapest, where he also served as a Dayan. Survived World War II and immigrated to the USA, where he taught Torah at the Nitra Yeshiva and the ‘Adas Yere’im’ community of former residents of Vienna. Maran the Holy Rav of Satmar greatly admired him. Maran the Gaon Rabbi Moshe Feinstein titled him ‘Gedol Hador’.
