[1] leaf, official stationery of the "Great Yeshiva of Lida", 21 cm. Typewritten letter, with Rabbi Reines’ handwritten signature.
The Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak Reines (1839-1915) one of the greatest rabbis of Lithuania. In his youth, he studied at the Volozhin Yeshiva, were he became renowned as an Iluy, a diligent and well-versed scholar. Served as Rav in various communities (Sventzian, Lida and Manchester, England to which he came due to a promise to fund the printing of his great Sefer – commentary on the entire Shulchan Aruch. However, he soon returned to Lithuania, seeing that his hands were tied and he could not positively impact and work for fortifying the walls of religion. This decision led to his great enterprise on the Shulchan Aruch to be lost). In order to prevent youth who were interested in general education and science from leaving the yeshivas to study in universities, Rabbi Reines asked, in 1882, to add to the yeshiva curriculum the study of the official language of the state and secular studies al taharas hakodesh. Despite fierce resistance by many rabbis, and despite harassments, Rabbi Reines opened the "Torah UMada" Yeshiva in Sventzian, which was the first yeshiva to teach secular studies as well. After several years, the yeshiva closed. Several years later, in 1905, when Rabbi Reines became the Rav of Lida, he reopenend it in Lida. Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak was one of the founders of HaMizrachi Movement.
