Letter on matters of helping an individual, handwritten entirely by the Gaon Rabbi Naftali [Herman] Adler Hacohen, the Chief Rabbi of England and the son of the Gaon Rabbi Nathan [Marcus] Adler the Chief Rabbi of the British Empire, to the Geonim and Tzaddikim of Jerusalem, the Rav of the city the Great Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant and the Tzaddik Gaon Rabbi Itzaleh Blazer – Petersburger, one of Gedolei HaMussar. 1905.
In the letter, Rabbi Adler who is also called Dr. Herman Adler, asks the rabbis and Tzaddikim of Jerusalem to act for a British Jew, ‘Binyomin Mazessahn’, who was born in Russia, who wants to immigrate to his house in Jerusalem, in the ‘Machaneh Yehuda’ colony, yet a renter is living there who for a long time has been refusing to pay the rent. Rabbi Herman Adler asks the Rabbis of Jerusalem to help him evacuate the renter-invader.
The great Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant [1816-1909] the renowned Rav of Jerusalem and defender of its walls for dozens of years. Established most of the Torah, education and charity institutions and orphanages of Jerusalem. The founder of the Beis Din of Jerusalem who united the Ashkenazic community and that of the ‘Prushim’. One of the greatest leaders of Yisroel and transmitters of the teachings.
The Tzaddik Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer [1837-1907] one of the first and greatest Ba’alei HaMussar, a close disciple of the holy Gaon Rabbi Yisroel Salanter. The Rav of Petersburg and one of the most influential figures on the Mussar Movement. Immigrated to Eretz Yisroel in 1904, a year before writing this letter. Was also known as ‘Rabbi Itzaleh Blazer’ and ‘Rabbi Itzaleh Peterburger’. Was admired by learners of Mussar, the residents of Jerusalem the members of the Torah world. Authored the Sefer ‘Pri Yitzchak’.
Chief Rabbi Naftali Herman Adler, the successor of his renowned father Rabbi Nathan Marcus Adler as Chief Rabbi of the British Empire. An important author and commentator. Served as the Chief Rabbi of England during the years 1891-1901.
