Lengthy letter handwritten entirely by the great Gaon Rabbi Shimon Shkop the Rosh Yeshiva of ‘Sha’ar HaTorah’ Yeshiva in Grodno, autho of ‘Sha’arei Yosher’, referring to the Geonim Maran Rabbi Chaim Ozer of Vilna and the Chofetz Chaim of Radin. 1925.

The entire letter deals with deep and branched public matters, especially about the yeshivas and Vaa’d HaYeshivas which was established those years for them. Maran the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Shkop gets into the thick of things, demonstrating the beauty of his leadership in basing the holy yeshivas in Lithuania in particular and all around Europe in general. Thus for example, he recommends one of the most important and talented activists: As to R. Nachman Kop, I do not know him yet have heard that he is has a talent for it therefore should be given the job for a trial period. He urges the receiver of the letter, the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Shuv the confidante and secretary of the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky of Vilna ‘to rush his honor since I have not found someone more reliable than him’.

About another suggestion to ask for help and a loan from five philanthropists in Grodno – he writes ‘To find five Tzaddikim in Grodno is far-fetched and should not be relied on at all…

Later in the letter, he refers to finding a Rav for an unknown place: ‘It is my opinion and that of my son-in-law the Gaon Maharash Hindis that he is capable of it and when we receive a response from him, I will write you who he is …’

At the center of the letter, a rare and profound reference to the Geonim leaders of Yisroel: About the efforts to obrain Visez, it is our opinion that the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer and the Gaon author of the Chofetz Chaim should write to the philanthropist Raphael Sharshevsky in Warsaw and ask him to try … and Hashem will do as He pleases.

The letter continues to discuss the yeshivas and Va’ad HaYeshivas, the communities of Lithuania and more.

At its end, the Gaon Shimon Shkop pleads that the official operating license for Va’ad HaYeshivas be obtained from the authorities.

The great Gaon author of ‘Sha’arei Yosher’ Rabbi Shimon Yehuda HaKohen Shkop (1860-1939) one of the greatest Rosh Yeshivas in Lithuania and leaders of the generation. After two years of studying at the Mir Yeshiva, he joined a selected group which studied Torah with the Gaon Rabbi Chaim of Brisk at the Volozhin Yeshiva. He married the niece of Rabbi Eliezer Gordon of Telz, who was impressed by his spiritual greatness and invited him to serve as a Ram at the Telz Yeshiva for eighteen years. In 1920, he was called by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodsinsky to serve as the Rosh Yeshiva of the Sha’ar HaTorah Yeshiva in Grodno. He held this position until his passing. There he also published his book "Sha’arei Yosher", a basic book for Yeshiva students throughout the Jewish world.
