The sage Rabbi Menasheh Ben Yisroel, one of the greatest sages of Amsterdam in his generation, lived several years in Brasil and England. Worked for removing the ban on the entrance of Jews to the British Island and even met with Oliver Cromwell for that. Had ties with many gentile scholars, who greatly appreciated him, including the Swedish Queen Christine. Yet he also wrote: "ואני תפילות לאל לא עשיתי חכמות חיצוניות קבע".
