Toldos Yitzchak, by Rabbi Yitzchak Karo. Riva Detrinto, [1558]. Second edition. Rare.
Sefer Toldos Yitzchak on the Torah, authored by the sage rabbi Yitzchak Karo. Rive Detrinto, [1558]. Rare.
115 leaves, 20 cm. Incomplete copy without the title page and the leaf of the author’s foreword. Owner’s signatures "… Reinitz", "Hersch Fischer", "Mordechai hacohen Adler" and more. One of the first Seforim that were printed in Riva Detrinto, where the printery started to operate approx. four years before the printing of this Sefer. In several places in the Sefer, words were censored by drawing a line on them – however, they are still readable. Possibly, the leaf with the author’s forewrd was cut off also by the censor since in it, the author describes the deportation of the Jews of Spain and Portugal, the Jews’ distress and the conversions subsequent to the deportations.
Rabbi Yitzchak Karo (1458-1535) a disciple of Rabbi Yitzchak Knafenton, a physician, Darshan and Rosh Yeshiva, one of the exiles of Spain and Portugal, the uncle of Maran Rabbi Yosef karo, who greww up in his house in Istanbul. Author of the Seforim "Toldos Yitzchak" and "Chasdei David". At the end of this Sefer, the author wrote that he needed to shorten his commentary since many give up on lengthy commentaries and all the more so in this generation, a generation of persecutions and deportations.
Signs of wear to the binding: an old, ornate leather binding with buckles, the title page and first leaf are missing, aging stains, good condition.
