‘תלמידי אהובי וחביבי הב’ המופלג החרוץ שיחי’ רענן משכיל על דרך טוב ירא השם וחרד על דברו’. A letter filled with love of a Rav to his disciple by the great Gaon Rabbi Yeshaya First of Wien to his close disciple Maran the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Halevi Wosner author of ‘Sheves Halevi’ in his youth – in which he responds to his Torah innovations and asks him to take care of his body and health alongside his impressive diligence in the study of the Torah.
Alongside the complete personality of Maran the great Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Halevi Wosner author of the ‘Sheves Halevi’ in teaching Torah, supporting religion, establishing thousands of Morei Hora’ah and Halacha, well-known was his caution in maintaining his health so that he would be fresh and healthy for Avodas Hashem and studying His Torah.
This is a rare and dear letter by one of the greatest Geonim, the leading Rav of Maran the author of Sheves Halevi, the Gaon Rabbi Yeshaya First of Wien, the Rav of the "Schif Schul", who instructs him to exercise caution in maintaining the body and the mind and take care of his health alongside his awe-inspiring diligence in the study of the Torah.
The Gaon Rabbi Yeshaya First discusses the Torah innovations of his young disciple, who eventually became Gedol Hador, and debates at length the question of Rabbi Akiva Eiger, referring to the Chavos Yair which discusses the subject and at its end writes: "And I hope you succeed my beloved disciple and may your Torah be your art but I will also note that you should strengthen your body and let everything be in the right amount and do not deny yourself appropriate food and drink and sleep so that you will strengthen in spirit also and all those who love you will savor you including your loving Rav who wishes your success".
The Tzaddik Gaon Rabbi Yeshaya First [1857-1943] one of the important disciples of Maran the Kessav Sofer and the Sheves Sofer. A leading founder of Agudas Yisroel. The Rav of the communities of Tirna, Preshov and the Rav and Av Beis Din of Kehal Adas Yisroel (Schif Schul) of Vienna. With the destruction of the community, during the occupation of Austria, he escaped to London, where he lived, worked and passed away in 1943. Authored the Sefer ‘Chazon Yeshaya’.
Postcard 15X10.5 cm. Handwritten entirely by him and on its back, Rabbi Wosner’s address in his youth. Postmark from 1930. Very good condition.
