Responsum on Hilchos Yichud by Rabbi Yosef Toib the Dayan of Frankfurt am Main to Rabbi Yosef Katz Av Beis Din of Hanover. [Tzel], ca. [1690].
"מה שכתבתי להאב"ד דמדינת הנובר כמוהר"ר יוסף כ"ץ אושטרודא בענין האשה בעולת בעל שהשכירה שם על הפבריק דטובאק. בעיר צעל". Responsum on Hilchos Yichud regarding a Jewish servant working in a tobacco factory handwritten by the Dayan of Frankfurt am Main, Rabbi Yosef Toib. [Tzel], ca. [1695].
[1] leaf, 10X16 cm. Handwritten and signed by Rabbi Yosef Toib. This Halachic responsum constitutes a historical document indicating the daily schedule and terms of employment of a Jewish servant, married and mother of a child, in a gentile factory in Osterode in the late 17th century in Germany, and the rabbis’ concern with observing the laws of Yichud and preventing the woman’s defamation. Enclosed is a printed version of the letter and information about its writer and addressee.
Rabbi Yosef ben Rabbi Chaim Toib – Tzaddik and Gaon, Dayan, Parnas and leader in Frankfurt am Main. The son-in-law of Rabbi Baruch Hacohen of Metz. Passed away in 1695.
Rabbi Yosef ben Rabbi Meshulam Zissel Katz [Cohen], a knowledgeable Gaon who was born in Frankfurt am Main and lived in Fulda until the deportation of its Jews in 1671 by the governor of the city Prince Abbott Gustav. Later he lived in Osterode, Braunschweig and during the years 1687-1703 was Av Beis Din and Ram of Braunschweig and the first State Rav of Hanover. His friend Rabbi Yair Bachrach, author of Chavos Yair greatly praised his virtues and commented on his great love for him. In this letter, Rabbi Yosef Toib also greatly praises him. Passed away in 1704.
