Lengthy letter handwritten entirely by the Gaon and father of the yeshivas Maran Rabbi Shimon Yehuda Shkop, with his holy signature, for the Grodno Yeshiva which he founded and headed. Written when he was staying in the USA.
The letter was sent to his disciple and friend the Gaon Rabbi Aharon Reuven Tcherni, a student of the Volozhin Yeshiva, Rav in Bean, England and eventually one of the sages and rabbis of Lithuanian Jewry in America. In the letter, Maran Rabbi Shimon Shkop asks that he dedicate one of the upcoming Sabbaths to raising funds for his yeshiva which is struggling with difficulties. Rabbi Shimon notes that he will come to the ‘Shomer Emunah’ synagogue this Sabbath and therefore asks to come to Rabbi Tcherni’s Beis Midrash and synagogue on the following Sabbath to campaign for the holy ‘Sha’ar HaTorah’ Yeshiva in Grodno’.
Rabbi Shimon signs: ‘And by this I am his friend … with love Shimon Yehuda Hacohen Shkop’.
The great Gaon author of ‘Sha’arei Yosher’ Rabbi Shimon Yehuda HaKohen Shkop (1860-1939) one of the greatest Rosh Yeshivas in Lithuania and leaders of the generation. He married the niece of Rabbi Eliezer Gordon of Telz, who was impressed by his spiritual greatness and invited him to serve as a Ram at the Telz Yeshiva for eighteen years. In 1920, he was called by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodsinsky to serve as the Rosh Yeshiva of the Sha’ar HaTorah Yeshiva in Grodno. He held this position until his passing.
