Midrash Shmuel, collection of commentaries on Tractate Avos, authored by Rabbi Shmuel de Ozida, Russia-Poland, ca. 1820.
Sefer Midrash Shmuel had many editions, including two almost identical ones (with very slight variations) which were published in Russia-Poland. Apparently, one was published in Radvil and the other in Lemberg. It is impossible to detrmine precisely which of these editions is this one.
Rabbi Shmuel de Ozida (1545-1604) one of the greatest disciples of Rabbeinu the Ari. Was born in Safed to Rabbi Yitzchak de Ozida and studied Torah with Rabbi Elisha Galico (a disciple of Maran the Beis Yosef). Inspired by his Rav, he became an enthusiastic Darshan. Later he established a yeshiva where the students studied Nigleh and Nistar. Rabbi Shmuel de Ozida was one of the Ari’s first disciples and a Talmid Chaver of the Ramak. Like another of the Ari’s disciples – Rabbi Moshe Alsheich, Rabbi Shmuel also dealt with the Drush, despite his Kabbalistic greatness. After the Ari’s passing, he accepted the authority of Rabbeinu Chaim Vital and even signed in 1575 a Hitkashrus deed with him.
