The Damascus Affair – a shocking blood libel against the Jews of Damascus in 1840, during the regime of Muhammed Ali of Egypt. Due to the libel, the leaders of the Jewish community were arrested and accused of murdering a Christian monk and his Muslim servant for using their blood to bake Matzas. During the investigation, the prisoners were cruelly tortured. As a result, some of them perished while others were forced to plead guilty to crimes they did not commit. Only few succeeded in withstanding the terrible tortures without breaking. Many anti-Semites in European countries supported the libel, presenting the "admission" of the accused as irrefutable proof of the Jews’ guilt throughout the ages. Western Jewish dignitaries and politicians, including Moses Montefiore, published documents pertaining to the affair and succeeded in influencing worldwide public opinion, leading  Muhammed Ali to release the prisoners who were still alive. As a token of appreciation for Moses Montefiore’s blessed involvement in saving the Jews of Damascus, these Piyyutim were written. Additional Piyyutim were also written and they were published in Jerusalem in Keter Shem Tov – Kenaf Renanim (Jerusalem, 1849).
