Archive of the Maya family of Breslau: letter by Rabbi Yosef Maya to his brother Rabbi Shimon Michael Maya, Sefer Misped Gadol VeChaved Me’od [Dyrenfurth, 1811], Bar Mitzvah sermon, drafts of versions for the tombstones of varied family members, owner’s signatures and more. Historical documents from the family archive, from the 19th century.
* Letter by Rabbi Yosef Maya to his brother Rabbi Shimon Michael Maya with Iyunim in Divrei Poskim. At its end, his wife the Rebbetzin Mrs. Sherl the daughter of the Gaon Rabbi Yeshaya Pik added several lines to her brother-in-law and a Mazel Tov blessing for the "Schul-Gang" of his wife, her sister-in-law, "the modest pedigreed wise Mrs. Pesil", and her daughter. * Sefer Misped Gadol VeChaved Me’od, a eulogy delivered by Rabbi Michael Shimin Maya for his brother, the renowned Chassid Rav Rabbi Yosef Maya, in Breslau. [Yosef Maya Press], Dyrenfurth, [1811].
[1], 14 leaves, 19 cm. new semi-leather binding, stains, professional restoration of blemishes, some damaged words, good condition.
* Flyleaf that was attached to the Sefer "Michlol Yoffi" with ownership notations "Belongs to the renowned true Gaon Michael Shimon Maya Mocher Seforim from Breslau". On the other side of the leaf, several biblical innovations which apparently have not been published, presumably handwritten by Rabbi Michael Shimon Maya.
* Copy of the Bar Mitzvah sermon of Rabbi Moshe Leib ben Rabbi Michael Shimon Maya. Written on its upper parr: "Bar Mitzvah sermon, which I studied with the renowned Gaon Michael Shion Maya", signed by Rabbi Moshe Leb. Written [many years after Rabbi Moshe Leib’s Bar Mitzvah and after his father’s passing] in [1862]. "היו[ם] יו[ם] ב’ ר"ח אב שנעשתי בר מצוה ב’ר’כ’ת’ ד’ תע[שיר] לפ"ק". [1] leaf, 17X21 cm.

– Mrs. Rechl bas Zenvil Katz of Lisa the wife of Rabbi Michl M.S. (passed away in 1820 – appearing on the back of the page is part of a letter by the Chevra Kaddisha of the Breslau community, calling to support the Jews of Safed who are suffering from hunger). – Mrs. Pesil bat Rabbi Yitzchak Hacohen Rappaport Av Beis Din of Leipnik, Rabbi Michael Shimon Maya’s wife (passed away in 1827).
-[3] versions for the tombstone of Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Leib ben Rabbi Michael Shimon Maya (passed away in 1867). 22X27 cm. 20X34 cm. 10X19 cm. Scribal script. Two of the triple versions are almost identical.
– [3] different versions for the tombstone of Avraham ben Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Maya (passed away in 1870, at the age of 17). On one of the leaves, dates of [births and] passing of additional family members were added as well as a list of Seforim by Rabbi Avraham Tiktin of Breslau which were published by the Maya family.
Enclosed is a handwritten leaf on the virtue of saying Psukei Bitchonos according to the tradition of the Maharal of Prague.
The history of the Maya family: Rabbi Yechiel Michl ben Rabbi Leib Maya was born in Frankfurt am Main. After marrying Mrs. Rechl bay Rabbi Zenvil Katz of Lisa, he moved to live near his father-in-law. In [1766] he came to Dyrenfurth, where with his partner he printed the Sefer Chidushei Halachos Maharam Schif. In 1768 he purcahsed the printing house of Dyrenfurth and printed many Seforim. He moved to the nearby city of Breslau, where he opened a bookstore, thus being titled ‘Reb Michel M.S. [=Mocher Seforim (Book-seller)]. After his passing in [1795], his widow and orphans continued to operate the printing house.
The Gaon Rabbi Michael Shimon ben Rabbi Yechiel Michl Maya (passed away in 1833) was the son-in-law of the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Rappaport Av Beis Din of Leipnik, and the father of Rabbi Moshe Leib Maya , who approbated the Sefer "Ohel Yissachar" (Altona, 1826). His son-in-law, Rabbi Mordechai Lowenstein, eulogized Rabbi Michael Shimon and the eulogy was published in Sefer Misped Mar.
The great Gaon Rabbi Yosef ben Rabbi Yechiel Michl Maya (1764-1810) was the son-in-law of the Gaon Rabbi Yeshaya Berlin (Pik) Av Beis Din of Breslau. Wrote comments on Sefer She’iltot DeRav Acha and with his brother Rabbi Michael Shimon, the Chidushei Hagahos on Arba’ah Turim, which was published anonymously. Rabbi Akiva Eiger visited Rabbi Yosef Maya and later wrote of him "My beloved friend and Rav the great, sharp, knowledgeable Tzaddik Yosef Maya". The Gaon Rabbi Ephraim Margolis wrote of him "The leading Rav". The eulogy for him by his brother, Rabbi Michael Shimon, was published in Sefer Misped Gadol VeChaved Me’od, referring to the diligence and charity of his Tzaddik brother.
