Divan, manuscript, beginning with Piyyutim for Sabbath by Rabbi Yehuda Halevi. Unique, impressive item. Yemen, ca. 19th century.
Manuscript. Divan with more than [120] Piyyutim, "Shiros VeTishbachos LeEl Elohei Haruchos", with indices. Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic.
The Divan, at first, appeared at the end of the prayer book, the Tiklal, and contained a collection of Piyyutim and Zemiros, initially by the poets of the golden age of Jewish culture in Spain including the Ibn Ezra, Ibn Gabirol and Rabbi Yehuda Halevi. Later, Piyyutim by Yemenite poets were added to it, headed by Rabbi Shalom Shabazi. Over time, the Divan was separated from the Tiklal and was used as a collection of songs for joyful events, each copyist choosing which Piyyutim were to be contained in it. The format of this Divan is the typical one: a long, narrow book which could be carried in the pocket of a coat.
140 leaves, 8X24 cm. On leaf 31, gluing and repairs.
Original leather binding, remnants of loops that were used to close the book, moth holes, stains, loose spine, fair-good condition.
