Yad David, by Rabbi Yosef David Sinzheim. Offenbach, [1799] With notations by the person who had received the Sefer as a gift from the author.
Yad David on the Shas, I, on Tractate Berachos and Seder Mo’ed. The press of Zvi Hirsch P.B [Pressburg] Segal and his son Avraham, Offenbach, [1799]. A copy that was given as a gift by the author.
[2], 288 leaves. 33 cm.
The author’s preface describes the atrocities he went through during the French Revolution: "In 1894 crucial days of wrath came … we almost perished we were all lost". The author describes the burning of Torah scrolls, the persecution of observers of religion, which caused his exile and his vow to write this Sefer.
This copy was given as a gift by the author to Chacham Moshe, who enclosed with it a letter that is mounted on the inside binding of the Sefer and who wrote ownership notations on the title page, in Sephardic script: "This Sefer to Moshe was a gift by … the renowned great Rab the author president of Yisroel and Av Beis Din of Consistoire … of Paris … six of Kislev … 1812 … longevity". This last greeting is understandable in light of the fact that this letter was written in the days when Napoleon’s army was fighting in Russia and suffered many casualties.
Appearing on the lower part of the letter is an additional Italian letter that was written four days later.
Rabbi Yosef David Sinzheim (1736-1812), president of the "Sanhedrin" of Paris and the first Chief Rabbi of France on behalf of the Consistoire, author of Yad David on the Shas. Served as Rosh Yeshiva in Paris until it was closed during the French Revolution. Subsequent to the French terror regime and the persecution against religion, the Rav escaped to Strasbourg, where he hid his Seforim before continuing his journey. Later, he returned to Strasbourg, where a Jewish community was reestablished, to serve as Rav.
The title page is glued, aging stains, some moth holes, good condition.
