Two copies of  the ‘Tzemach Tzeddek’ first edition, Vilna, 1884. The different editions with the ‘corrections’ of the titles of HaGra of Vilna!!

Chabad. 2 editions of Shut ‘Tzemach Tzeddek’, Vilna 1884, with the famous quote of the words of HaGra of Vilna, whose titles change from one edition to the other.

On p. 138 the Holy Rav Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch writes, among others: "…והגר"א הביא מנדרים (דמ"ט) שעטני מעיל.  ואינה תשובה" דהרי..".

In the copies that were ‘corrected’ by the printers of Vilna, it was written: "..והגר"א הביא מנדרים (דמ"ט) שעטני מעיל. "ו אנכי בעניי לא זכיתי להבין דבריו הקדושים" דהרי..".

A letter by the Rebbe on the subject appears in his Sefer Igros HaKodesh (volume 8, p. 237) and his opinion on the matter:

Once upon a time and as I have heard from the Holy Admor … that the printers of Vilna (and I haven’t heard clearly whether the Bochur Zetzer [the typesetter] and his supervisors and the publishers too), which is common knowledge that then the printing of Piskei-Dinim was a fortress city of the Misnagdim and apparently to this was added the fact that the year of 1884 was soon after the passing of the Admor Moharash and anyway a time of emergency, and they took advantage of the opportunity to forge, and instead of ואינה תשובה printed the version copied by Kevod Toraso and when the first copies reached Lubavitch, they took every possible measure and reprinted the last pages according to the version of the Tzemach Tzeddek, and is is understandable that I could not destroy all the copies with the forged versions".

Before us are copies of both editions, one facing the other. Minor stains. Non-original bindings. Sizes vary. Very good general condition.
