The holy Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Assad served as a Rav in Semnitz before becoming the Rav of Serdehil. Famed is the story about the saving of all the residents of the town from a Pogrom that was about to take place on Leil HaSeder in Semnitz. Rabbeinu the Mahari Assad gathered all the residents of the town and when the gentile murderers approached, he started blowing the Shofar, causing them to flee.

The holy Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Assad [1796-1866] one of the greatest rabbis of Hungary and a leading Posek in the generation after the Chasam Sofer, who called him ‘a great scholar, Ish Tzaddik Tamim’. The Rav of Serdehil and Rosh Yeshiva of hundreds of students. His disciples were important rabbis of Hungary. Maran the Divrei Chaim called him ‘Mofes Hador’.
