Third Sefer of the Shut by Rabbi Yosef [ben David] Ben Lev. Shlomo and Yosef Yavetz Press, [Kushtandina], [1573]. Rare.
120, 133-175 [i.e. 174], 187-190, [5] leaves, 29 cm. Mispagination. On the colophon at the end of the Sefer, it is written that the author is suffering from an illness and pains and is on his deathbed. On the title page is written that the author instructed to print this volume "when he was in Kushtandina … at the yeshiva of the great pedigreed lady [Dona Gracia Nassih]". Owner’s signatures and a lengthy scholarly gloss in Sephardic script.
Rabbi Yosef Ben David Ibn Lev (ca. 1505-1580) – Rav, Av Beis Din, Rosh Yeshiva and a leading contemporary Posek, author of the Maharibal SHut, which was published in his lifetime. Included in his Sefer were also his innovations on several tractates of the Shas and innovations he introduced on behalf of his son, Rabbi David, who was murdered when he was young. Rabbi Yosef served as Av Beis Din of Salonika and as Rosh Yeshiva in Kushta, which was established by Dona Gracia Nassih. He was renowned as a sharp and knowledgeable Posek who corresponded with Maran Rabbi Yosef Karo, Rabbi Yosef Taitachek and the Maharshdam.
New, impressive leather binding, stains, a short tear to one of the leaves and minor blemishes to another. Restoration to the edges of the title page. Some of the last leaves were taken from another copy and were professionally restored. fair-good condition.
