Gift deed, signed by Rosh Av Beis Din of Safed Rabbi Raphael Zilberman. Safed and Tiberius, [1900].
"Before us the undersigned witnesses, the woman M. Gitl the widow of Rabbi Eliyahu of Venice told us be my witnesses … and write … and sign and give to my eldest son Meir David … I hereby give from now on as a gift … the three houses listed here which stand in the city of Safed …".
[1] leaf, 38 cm. Gift deed with the stamp of the Badatz of the Ashkenazi community of Safed, the witnesses’ signatures, and the signature of the Rosh Av Beis Din of Safed confirming the witnesses’ signatures. On the lower part of the document, confirmation by the recipient’s brother and the signatures of the witnesses in Tiberius, confirimg the brother’s signature.
Rabbi Rapahel Zilberman (1841-1918), the Rav of the Ashkenazi community of Safed. was born in Uman and immigrated to the land of Israel with his parents in 1850. A disciple of his father Rabbi Mordechai who was the Rav of Uman and was appointed the Rav of Safed. Studied in yeshivas in Safed and was known for his wisdom and Torah greatness. Since 1860 served as the Dayan of the Ashkenazi community of Safed and since 1872 succeeded his father as the Rav of Safed.
