The Gaon Rabbi Leib Shaer (1733-1821) one of the greatest sages of Ashkenaz in his generation, a friend of Ba’al HaFela’ah. Av Beis Din of Detmolt and Frankfurt am Main and since 1779, Av Beis Din and Ram of Duseldorf and the state. His Divrei Torah were introduced in Sefer Divrei Emunah (Piotrkow, 1908) and in issue 65 and issue 70 of Or Yisroel (Monsey). The Nodah BiYehuda referred to him un Shut Mahadura Tanyana, Siman 57. In the Sefer of the Nodah BiYehuda, Tziyun LeNefesh Chaya (Prague, 1799), Rabbi Leib signed the announcement prohibiting the reprinting of the Sefer without the publisher’s agreement. He left manuscripts with innovations on the Shas and Shulchan Aruch and Shut.
A eulogy for him by Rabbi Yehuda Leib Carlburg was published in Sefer Shalosh Yevavos (Mintz, 1821) and a eulogy for him by the Chasam Sofer was introduced in Derashos HaChasam Sofer [II].
