81 leaves, on the title page, the signature of Rabbi Eliyahu Munk and a notation indicating that he had received the Sefer from his teacher, the Gaon author. With the stamps of Rabbi Eliyahu’s son, the Rav Dr. Ezra [Emanuel] Munk of Berlin.
The author Rabbi Yaakov Yokev Ettlinger (1798-1871), one of the greatest rabbis of Ashkenaz in his generation. Studied with the greatest rabbis of Ashkenaz such as Rabbi Asher the son of the Sheagas Aryeh, Tabbi Avraham Bing and Rabbi Avraham Binyamin Ze’ev Hamburg (author of Sha’ar Zekenim). Rabbi Yaakov was one of the first orthodox rabbis who was also an academic as a student of the Würzburg University. Served as a Rav in many communities of Ashkenaz. He was one of the fierce opponents of the Reform Movement which was established in Germany in his time. His greatest students at the yeshivas he had established were the Rashar Hirsch and Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer.
Rabbi Eliyahu ben Rabbi Michl Leib Munk (1818-1899) the son of the Gaon Rabbi Michl Leib [Yechiel Aryeh] Munk Rosh Av Beis Din of Danzig. Was the disciple of Rabbi Akiva Eiger at the Posen Yeshiva and of Rabbi Yaakov Ettlinger at the Altona Yeshiva. Married Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer’s sister. Rabbi Eliyahu taught Torah in a school in Altona and in a Talmud Torah in Hamburg and was one of the editors of the journal Shomer Zion HaNe’eman. Since 1873 served as Rav in the Kloiz of Hamburg and since 1885, as a Dayan of the Hamburg community. His sons and grandsons serves as rabbis in Germany, England and the USA.
Rabbi Ezra (Azriel) ben Rabbi Eliyahu Munk (1867-1940) one of the prominent rabbis of Germany in his time, a disciple of his uncle Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer at the seminar for rabbis of berlin. Studied at the Berlin and Konigsberg universities and was an active member of the Union of Orthodox Students in Germany. Since 1893 was a Rav in Konigsberg. Since 1900 succeeded his uncle as the Rav of the Adas Yeshurun community of Berlin and published several articles and responsa. Was a member of the council of rabbis of Agudas Yisroel in Germany as well as a member of other organizations of orthodox Jewry in Germany. In 1938, immigrated to Jerusalem, following his children.
Enclosed is an article published for the publishing of the second edition of this Sefer, which was published with Sefer Aruch Laner and a copy of an article by Rabbi Michl Munk which was published originally in Shomer Zion HaNe’eman. Enclosed is also information about Rabbi Eliyahu Munk, from the book The History of the Munk Family (Hebrew), pp. 48-49.
