Letter by Prof. Boris Schatz to Zalman Rubin, ordering coupons for purchasing potatoes for the workers of Bezalel. Jerusalem, [1913].
"But since our workers find it difficult to go and wait at the door of the committee of all the Kollelim since they cannot leave their work, therefore I want to ask his honor to kindly send us coupons to Bezalel of 500 Rotl potatoes. I will give the coupons to the workers and immediately pay his honor the money"; a request by Boris Schatz for coupons for the workers of Bezalel before Passover 1913, for buying potatoes, which were sold at a discount to the poor of Jerusalem.

Prof. Boris (Dov) Schatz (1866-1932) – the founder of the Bezalel academy of art and design in Jerusalem. After studying painting and sculpting in Paris, he established and headed the Bulgarian Royal Academy of Art. During the Zionist Congress of 1905, Prof. Schatz suggested to establish in Jerusalem a Hebrew school of art. A year later, he founded in Jerusalem an art center that was eventually called Bezalel and around which artists, craftsmen and intellectuals gathered. He passed away in the USA during a fundraising campaign for Bezalel and was laid to rest on the Mount of Olives.
Reb Zalman ben Rabbi Avraham Abba Hacohen Rubin (1859-1921) – the chairman of the Va’ad Hakellali Knesses Yisroel. He was one of the dignitaries of Kovno who frequented the home of the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Elchonon Spektor. Was an important merchant, owned a factory and faithfully took care of the public’s needs. In 1904, he was one of the founders of the Shomrei Torah society that worked to establish Talmudei Torah in the settlements of Eretz Yisroel. A year later, he was appointed the manager of Kollel Vilna and Zanot and immigrated with his family to Jerusalem. He was chosen to head the Va’ad HaKellai Knesses Yisroel, which united the Ashkenazic Kollelim of the old Yishuv and invested a large amount of money in building the houses of the Meah She’arim neighborhood. Over the years, he held many public positions in Jerusalem: a member of the Meah She’arim committee, a member of the board of the Bikkur Cholim hospital, the Toras Chaim yeshiva, Moshav Zkeinim Me’uchad and the Eshel Avraham synagogue. He was one of the leaders of Agudas Yisroel in Jerusalem. During World War I, he was one of the founders of the assistance committee of the JOINT. In 1918, he was chosen as the vice president of the community committee and in 1920, was chosen as the representative of the Chareidim party of the Assembly of Representatives. Four days after the Balfour Declaration, he was attacked by Arabs. Several days later, he passed away and was laid to rest on the Mount of Olives. One of his eulogizers was the Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Hacohen Kook.
