Candy dish with a stem, hallmarked sterling silver, with a matching ornate glass dish. J.E. Caldwell Company, Philadelphia.
Silver dish on a stem, ornate silver, stamped on its lower part: Sterling 1215, J.E. CALDWELL&CO PHILA. With an engraving of the first letter of the owner’s name. On it, a glass dish decorated with leaves.
In 1839, the watchmaker and jeweler James Emet Caldwell (1813-1881) opened a shop in Philadelphia. Later, he added a partner and in 1848, the company received the name J.E. Caldwell & Co. In its early years, the company made its own silver products. Later however, it became a large retailer of jewelry and silver products, selling items that were made by leading American manufacturers.
