Historical! The original telegram sent by the leaders of the fighters for the respect of the dead in Eretz Yisroel to the holy Rav of Satmar, 1967.

‘Daily the dead are cut into pieces – wondering at the silence of the Diaspora Jewry – which ensures the saving of patients – knowingly – pinning Yisroel’s hopes on your help since we have had enough’.

Signed by Rabbi Raphael Soloveitchik the son of Maran the Griz the Gaon Rav of Brisk, the leader of the struggle against autopsies, and with him Rabbi Winner and Rabbi Levin.

The telegram was sent to Maran the holy Rav of Satmar to create a public opinion against the daily desecrating of the dead. The struggle against autopsies also included protests and rallies and meetings with physicians in an attempt to convince public figures to change the law.

Background: the autopsy storm accompanied the Kosher residents of the Holy Land since the early days of the State until ca. 1977. Since then, the subject occasionally comes up. Yet, during the first decades of the State, pathologists did whatever they wanted with all that was related to autopsies, claiming they were actually saving lives. No Rav, however, permitted the thing and often, old people would avoid being hospitalized so their body would not be desecrated after their passing. Thus, the struggle over the subject was most important. The letter refers to these old people who avoided being hospitalized with the words ‘which ensures the saving of patients’ which imply that if the autopsies cease to exist, patients could be hospitalized with no fear.
