Rare letter handwritten by the great Gaon Rabbi Elchonon Bonem Wasserman, the Rosh Yeshiva of Baranovich, to the heafs of Va’ad HaYeshivos of Vilna for the Or Yisroel Yeshiva of Luninets.
The letter was sent from Baranovich on Thursday Parashas Toldos to the Gaon Rabbi Aharon Berg, by the heads of Va’ad HaYeshivas of Vilna and the confidantes of Maran the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky.
Rabbi Elchonon gets straight to the point, writing ‘about Luninets, if there are indeed eighty students, it should indeed be supported but we must make sure it is true’.
He is referring to the Or Yisroel Karlin Stolin yeshiva in Luninets, under the presidency of the holy Rav Rabbi Avraham Elimelch of Karlin, who already in 1930 asked Maran the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer to send him a worthy Rosh Yeshiva for his large and important yeshiva. The Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer suggested Maran the Gaon Rabbi Elazar Menachem Mann Shach; the appointment, however, came to pass only five years later.
This letter was written and sent in 1931 and Maran the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer was already familar with the yeshiva of Luninets, as indicated by this letter. The Gaon Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman, on the other hand, was still studying the yeshiva, its nature and size.
later he notes that a meeting with the Gaon Rabbi Chizkiyahu Mishkovsky Av Beit Din of Kriniki and the Rav of Bistritz should be scheduled to discuss the results of the last summer.
The letter also deals with the Chavkin’s last will and the chance of obtaining some of the estate for the yeshivas of Lithuania, ways to raise funds for yeshiva students and more.
Rabbi Elchonon ends his special letter: ‘He who cherishes and honors his and blesses him with life and peace and all the best and awaiting his response’. He then added his handwritten signature.
To conclude he notes that last week the yeshiva did not receive the Das Vort daily newspaper which was published under the supervision of Maran the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer and wonders why.
On verso of the postcard, the addressee’s and sender’s name and the signature of Va’ad HaYeshivos confirming the letter was received in Kislev 1930.
[1] postcard, handwritten and signed by the Gaon Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman. Filing perforations. Very good condition.
