Request for an immigration certificate fot the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Kagan, signed and with handwritten additions by Maran the Kehilos Yaakov of Steipla. Mid-1930s.

In a rare manner, Maran the Steipler signed with the Yiddish spelling of his family name ‘קאניעווסקי’, although he was already living in Bnei Berak and was using the Hebrew spelling of his name, ‘קניבסקי’. Thus, this is a document from Eretz Yisroel which was still signed using the old spelling of his family name.

The request for an immigration certificate is for his Gaon brother-in-law Rabbi Shmuel Kagan, who was a Rav, as written under the category of ‘profession’ and who as living in Ukraine. This is the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu Kahn, the great son-in-law of the Gaon Rabbi Shemaryahu Yosef Kerlitz Av Beis Din of Kosovo and thus, the brother-in-law of Maran the Chazon Ish and the Steipler. He perished with his wife in the Holocaust.

Under the category of place of work, Maran the Steipler himself wrote ‘Ram at the Beis Yosef Yeshiva’ and the address ‘Bnei Berak’. The Steipler also added his handwritten signature as described above.

The lines of the details of the request were written by someone else.

Signature of the Gaon Rabbi Yonosson Binyomin Horowitz the chairman of Agudas Yisroel in Jerusalem was also added to the document, confirming the Steipler’s signature.

Minor tear to the filing perforations and along the edges. Stains. Fold marks. Good-very good condition.
