Letter by Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Lehren, the head of the Organization of Clerks and Administrators of Amsterdam, to Rabbi Zvi Binyomin Auerbach Av Beis Din of Darmstadt. [Amsterdam, 1850].
Letter by Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Lehren to Rabbi Zvi Binyomin Auerbach about the rabbinate of Rotterdam.
[1] leaf, handwritten by the secretary of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Lehren, Rabbi Ze’ev Wolf ben Rabbi Yosef. The letter was printed in the Tzfunos Journal, Year I (1989), 4, p. 90.
Historical background: in 1850, a dispute arose regarding the appointment of a Rav for the Rotterdam community. The Chareidi community supported the nomination of Rabbi Zvi Binyomin Auerbach, Av Beis Din of Darmstadt and author of Nachal Eshkol. The supporters of the nomination of Rabbi Auerbach included the Organization of Clerks and Administrators of Amsterdam, which wanted to prevent Reform Jews from taking control over the rabbinate of Rotterdam and establishing the first reform community of Holland. Eventually, Rabbi Yosef Isakson, the son-in-law of the Aruch Laner, was chosen for the position and during the twenty years he led the Rotterdam community, he fought Reform Judaism.
Rabbi Zvi Binyomin Auerbach suffered from persecutions by the Reform Jews of the Darmstadt community. In 1857, he resigned his position and left the community, moving to Frankfurt am Main. Six years later, he was chosen to serve as Av Beis Din of Halberstadt.
Rabbi Zvi Hirsch ben Rabbi Avraham Moshe Lehren (1784-1853) a philanthropist and senior banker of the "Holland et Lehren" Bank, who retired from his work at the bank to establish and head the Organization of Clerks and Administrators of Amsterdam (Kollel Hod). He supervised the donations for Torah learners in the Holy Land in the communities of western and central Europe.
