Three volumes of Aruch LaNer, some of them given by the author the great Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Ettlinger of Altona. 

On the title page of Aruch LaNer on tractate Yevamos, in handwriting: ‘Given to me by the Admor the Gaon Rav the author the holy Moshe Zvi [?] Hacohen … Altona”.


* Aruch LaNer on tractate Yevamos, published by the author the holy Gaon Rabbi Yokev the son of the holy Gaon Rabbi Aharon Ettlinger of Altona, in his lifetime, in 1850. With a notation that it was a gift by the author. 

An additional notation from the period on the flyleaf. 

[2], 122 leaves. The first two leaves are restored with tape. Dark leaves. Aging stains. Renewed binding. Good condition. 

* Aruch LaNer on tractate Makos and Kritus, published by the author. Altona, 1855. A copy signed by the Tzaddik Gaon Rabbi Lipman david Shuvaks Av Beis Din of Kollelos Chassidim of Jerusalem and previously a More Hora’ah in Kock in the Saraf of Kock’s lifetime. 

[2], 92 leaves. Many moth perforations. Dark leaves. 

* Aruch LaNer on tractate Rosh Hashana and tractate Sanhedrin, printed a year after the author’s passing in Warsaw, 1873. 

86 leaves. Ownership stamps of Rabbi Zeev Wolf Leiter the Rav of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The height of this volume differs from that of the other volumes.   

 

The author Rabbi Yaakov Yokev Ettlinger (1798-1871), one of the greatest rabbis of Ashkenaz in his generation. Studied with the greatest rabbis of Ashkenaz such as Rabbi Asher the son of the Sheagas Aryeh, Tabbi Avraham Bing and Rabbi Avraham Binyamin Ze’ev Hamburg (author of Sha’ar Zekenim). Rabbi Yaakov was one of the first orthodox rabbis who was also an academic as a student of the Würzburg University. Served as a Rav in many communities of Ashkenaz. He was one of the fierce opponents of the Reform Movement which was established in Germany in his time. His greatest students at the yeshivas he had established were the Rashar Hirsch and Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer.

Rabbi Lipman David ben Rabbi Yisroel Yitzchak [Shuvaks] (1830-1924) the only one who received his Hora’ah Semicha from the holy Rav Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kock and was even appointed by him Moreh Hora’ah in Kock. Studied Chevruta with the holy Rav Rabbi Avraham of Sochatchov author of Avnei Nezer and attended the lessons of the author of Chidushei HaRim. In 1898, Immigrated to Jerusalem and served as Rosh Av Beis Din Badatz Kollelos Chassidim of Jerusalem until his passing, after seventy years.
