Letter by the great Gaon Rabbi Mordechai Gimpel Yoffe of Rozhinai to his son and grandson, on matters of exemption from military service and the appointment of rabbis. Rozhinai, 1885.
The first part of the letter was written by the grandson, Rabbi Chaim Yoffe, to his uncle Rabbi Yaakov Rabinowitz and his wife Mrs. Bas Sheva. Rabbi Yaakov was the eldest son of the Gaon Rabbi Mordechai Gimpel Yoffe the author of Haggadas Mordechai and Elef Hamagen.
The letter deals with receiving a governmental rabbinic license. On the letter to the uncle, the grandfather, the addressee’s father, the great Gaon Rabbi Mordechai Gimpel, added 10 lines handwritten by him noting the documents needed for obtaining the license.
The Gaon Rabbi Mordechai Gimpel Yoffe Rabinowitz (1820-1891) Av Beis Din of Rozhinai. One of the greatest rabbis of Lithuania in his generation. A disciple of Rabbi Yitzchak ben Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin author of Nefesh HaChaim. Acted for Shivas Zion and even had close ties with Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer (a disciple of the Gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger, the initiator of the polemic regarding sacrifices at this time) and Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever. At the end of his days, he immigrated to Israel and settled in Ekron. His son, the Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Rabinowitz, lived in Lutzin and was the Rav of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Hacohen Kook in his youth.
