Document of a settlement reached by heirs, signed by the parties. Wronki, [1740].
"ע"ד סכסוכי’ שהי’ בין א’ צארטל ויורשי ר’ זלמן ברו"ד"; agreement of dispersal of estate referring in detail to merchandise and metals, debts and seizures and the Sifrei Kodesh of the estate. Wronki [Posnan district, Poland], [1740].
[1] leaf folded in half, [30] lines. manuscript with [5] signatures. Written on verso of the document: "Settlement between A and the heirs of Rabbi Zalman Brod".
In the 18th century, only a few hundred Jews were members of the Wronki community, yet they played a significant role in developing the trade and business of the town. The Jewish community took large loans from Polish noblemen and from the local church and in the mid-18th century, its debts reached the enormous sum of 200,000 gold coins. After Wronki was appended to Prussia in the late 18th century, new arrangements were made with the Prussian government pertaining to the payment of the debts. Possibly, the seizures referred to in this document are a result of the debts of the community at the time.
Fold lines. Wear to the edges of the leaf and a blemish to its lower part.
