Set of Chamisha Chumshei Torah, Netivos HaShalom, with Mendelson’s commentary. Berlin, 1783. First edition.
Sefer Netivot HaShalom, [5] volumes, Chamisha Chumshei Torah with Tikkun Sofrim and an Ashkenazi translation [in Hebrew letters, by Moses Mendelson] and a commentary [edited by Moses Mendelson]. Published by George Friedrich Starcke, Berlin, 1783. An extremely rare set!
The commentary was written by Shlomo Dubna (on Bereshis), Mendelson (on Shemos), Naftali Hirtz Vizel (on Vayikra), Aharon Friedenthal Yeruslav (on Bamidbar) and Herz Hamburg (on Devarim). The entire commentary was edited by Mendelson, who also added his comments.
[24], 299; [1], 204; [2], 218; 144; 125, [1] leaves. The volumes of Bamidbar and Devarim are without a title page. With a grandfather’s dedication to his grandson from [1815], in each of the volumes: "A gift to my grandson Michl the son of Hirsch Herz … here in Amsterdam, the 23rd of Kislev [1815] … from his grandfather Getshlik Herz".
The copy of the National Library contains a title page of the volume of Devarim; the title pages of Shemos and Vayikra appearing in these volumes, however, do not appear in the copies of the National Library. It seems that the varied title pages were omitted from varied copies as a result of the book being printed gathering after gathering for a lengthy period of time.
Original, worn leather bindings, the spine of volume I is loose, stains, moth holes, fair-good condition.
