Sefer Hamidot by Rabbeinu Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, akphabetically ordered. Printed with many variations in Breslov, in the house of his loyal disciple the holy Rav Rabbi Nosson of Breslov in 1821.
Important ownership notations from the period.
Sefer Hamidot was printed for the first time on Mahlov in 1811. Yet, its second edition was actually printed in the house of Rabbi Nosson of Breslov. Rabbi Nosson noted the importance of the holy manuscript and book, recalling that since all the copies of the first edition were sold out, a second edition was printed, with many variations and therefore it could be considered a first edition.
In that same year, the Tikkin haklali was also printed in the Rabbi Nosson’s house.
This edition of Sefer hamidot is extremely rare and does not appear in auctions.
Sefer Hamidot was authored by Rabbeinu Rabbi Nachman in his youth. Originally, the book was divided into two sections. The first section contained alphabetically ordered compilations from Ma’amarei Chazal and other holy books, ordering them under the entries of Emet, Ahava, Emunah and more. The second section contained his own Hasagot, things that were not explicitly introduced by the Sages or the holy books, but implied by them.
In the first edition that was printed in 1811 (the year of his passing), these two sections appeared separately. In the second edition, however, the editor, Rabbi Nosson, printed them together. That is, appearing under each entry is what was written about it in both sections of the first edition. To this edition, Rabbi Nosson also added varied additions and corrections.
The editor, Rabbi Nosson of Breslov, wrote in his foreword to the book:"Rabbeinu Or Hane’elam cautioned to study this book constantly since it is our lives and he wrote it himself in a small format, saying that by doing so everyone would be able to carry the book with them always, since the Midot are the foundation of the entire Torah".
Over the years, the greatest minds of Breslov made efforts to find the references and sources on which Rabbi Nachman based his book. Later editions of the book included references by the holy Gaon Rabbi Nachman of Tsherin and by the holy Gaon Rabbi Tzadol Hacohen of Lublin and more.
